YOU CAN INFLUENCE THE FUTURE DIRECTIONS OF ANTARCTIC AND SOUTHERN OCEAN SCIENCE IN LESS THAN 4 MINUTES!!!!

If you had all of the funding and support necessary to implement a cutting-edge Antarctic scientific research program in the next 20 years, what scientific questions would you attempt to answer? This is an opportunity to think beyond what is being studied today and dream of what Antarctic science could and should be in the future! We are looking for your best and most imaginative ideas to develop a collective community vision of the full promise and potential of science conducted in and from Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) has initiated the first ever Antarctic and Southern Ocean Science Horizon Scan (http://www.scar.org/horizonscanning/). This community-based effort  has begun with a wide call for your opinion and views of  the most important and compelling questions in Antarctic and Southern Ocean science over the next two decades. Questions can be of importance to global issues and/or questions grounded in curiosity-driven research capitalizing on the unique setting of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Questions supported by observations from Antarctica because of its singular characteristics are also solicited. Questions should be ones that are best addressed by research in the southern Polar Regions or where studies in Antarctica provide insights not attainable elsewhere.

This process will only be successful if the community chooses to actively participate by posing scientific questions that will ultimately be honed to a final listing of the 100 highest priority Antarctic and Southern Ocean research issues. The solicitation of questions has begun and it is estimated that in less than 4 minutes you can make your view known to the world-wide Antarctic community! In a little more than two weeks this first round solicitation will close (June 15, 2013) and if you don’t ensure that your and your community’s interests are represented in the question database – WHO WILL????

A simple on-line form has been developed to make your participation simple and easy:http://www.scar.org/horizonscanning/submitquestions.html. Guidance on what makes a compelling scientific question and a few examples are provided to stimulate your thinking.

You can also view the submissions received: http://www.scar.org/horizonscanning/questions.html

The Horizon Scan process will be based on inclusive, community-wide consultations led and managed by SCAR. Horizon Scan organizers invite all interested parties and individuals to participate throughout the process. No formal association with SCAR is necessary and the intent is to develop as broad a view as possible of future directions in Antarctic and Southern Ocean science, regardless of the source and/or affiliation of contributors. Not only do we want everyone to participate, your participation is essential for ensuring the credibility of the outcomes of the Horizon Scan.

We cannot reach this goal without your support and participation!
